# Turn Hugo on for a creator

> Find Hugo's switch for a creator, and read what her Overview says: Hugo is answering, on and held back, or off.

Turn Hugo on for a creator, and check that he is really answering her fans.

## Before you start

* You need an owner or admin account. Chatters and content VAs cannot turn Hugo on or off.
* The creator must be in OnlyX. See [Add your first creator](/getting-started/add-your-first-creator).

## The switch is permission, not a start button

Each creator has her own **Hugo** switch. When it is on, Hugo may answer her fans. But he answers only when all of these are true:

* Her account is connected.
* Her persona has an age and a backstory.
* Her hard limits are saved.
* At least one fan has synced from her account.

Hugo sells only after you map her content in **AI Content**. This is the **Map the content** step.

A new creator's switch is already on. So to get Hugo answering, you usually finish her setup rather than flip the switch.

## Turn Hugo on

    In OnlyX, click **Creators**. On a phone, **Creators** is under **More**. Then click the creator's card.

    Her page opens on the **Overview** tab. The Hugo card is under her profile card.

  <Step title="Read the heading">
    Read the heading of the Hugo card. It is "Hugo is answering", "Hugo is on, and held back" or "Hugo is off". The table after these steps says what each one means.

  <Step title="Turn on the switch">
    If the heading reads "Hugo is off", turn on the switch in the Hugo card.

    The heading changes to "Hugo is on, and held back" or to "Hugo is answering".

  <Step title="Finish the open steps">
    If the heading reads "Hugo is on, and held back", a step is not done yet. The line under the heading says how many steps are left. The steps without a tick say which.

    On each open step that has a button, click it and finish that step. **Let the fans sync** has no button: it is done when her first fan arrives. For a Telegram creator, set up **Payments connected** and **Media uploaded** on her **Payments** and **Media** tabs.

  When Hugo is answering, he sends messages to real fans in the creator's name. Check her persona and her hard limits before you turn him on.

| "Hugo is on, and held back" | The switch is on, but a step is not done. If **Connect the account**, **Write the persona**, **Set the hard limits** or **Let the fans sync** is open, he does not answer. If only **Map the content** is left, he answers her fans but sells nothing. |
| "Hugo is off" | The switch is off. Nothing is sent automatically. Every conversation waits for your team in the Master Inbox. |

An OnlyFans creator has 5 steps. A Telegram creator has 7, because she also needs **Payments connected** and **Media uploaded**. These two work like **Map the content**: Hugo answers her fans, but he cannot sell until they are done.

## Use the switch on the Creators page

Each card on the **Creators** page also has a **Hugo** switch. It changes the same setting as the switch on her **Overview** tab.

The card does not show whether Hugo is held back. After you turn Hugo on here, open her **Overview** tab to check the heading. Chatters and content VAs see this switch too, but they cannot change it.

## Turn Hugo off

To stop Hugo for a creator, turn off the same switch. The heading changes to "Hugo is off". Hugo then sends no messages for her, and every conversation waits for your team.

## If something goes wrong

    Your role cannot turn Hugo on or off. Ask an owner or admin.

  <Accordion title="A conversation shows &#x22;Hugo will not answer this thread&#x22;">
    The message names what stops Hugo, for example unfinished setup or billing. Click **Open setup** or **Open billing**, and fix the cause.

    Messages that arrive while Hugo is stopped are not queued. When you fix the cause, Hugo picks up fans who are still waiting for a reply. He does this only if their last message is no more than 7 days old. Answer older ones yourself.

    Hugo answers only the conversations that he holds. A conversation that shows **Manual**, **Escalated** or **Hugo off** waits for your team. See [Conversation states: Hugo, Manual, Escalated and Hugo off](/inbox/conversation-states).

  <Accordion title="Billing shows &#x22;AI paused&#x22;">
    Your credits ran out, and the grace period ended or the debt reached \$500. Hugo is paused for all your creators: he does not answer or sell until you add enough credits.

    Within the 7 days, add enough to owe less than \$500. Once the 7 days have ended, add enough to pay everything you owe. See [Add credits so Hugo can sell](/getting-started/add-credits).
